Here is a summary of key dates and how we will run the Fun Football program this year. The first Skills Development Session (training) will be on April the 5th, with the first Saturday Game Day on April the 7th.
Game Days
- Game Days are on Saturdays
- Grade 8 starts at 9:15am
- We are trialing doing an extra 15 minutes with Grade 8 this year, to allow for more focus on skill development. We’ll monitor how this goes over the first few weeks and may review this.
- The first game day of the season is the 7th of April
- Games will take place at Newtown 2 (the park just above the Athletics Track at Newtown Park)
- We will start each game day with some short activities designed to warm up, work on skills and team building. This will build upon what players have been working on in training during the week.
- The players will then play 3 x 12 min games and finish at 10:30am
- In both grades, teams play 5-a-side, with no goalkeepers, and on a small pitch
- We are going to trial finishing Game Days with a short Club BBQ (weather dependent) for all Grade 7 and 8 kids that want to stick around and have a well-earned snack! Each team will rotate around responsibility for the BBQ, so it will be great to have all parents and players involved in helping out
- We will email out playing regulations and other information closer to the start of the season
Festival Days
- Every 3rd week (Saturday) will be a Festival Day, where we will either host or travel to other clubs in Southern Wellington
- The other parks for Festival days are Miramar Park and Wakefield Park (Island Bay)
- First Festival Day is the 5th of May
- Expect the starting time to be different to our normal start time (though still in the morning)
Skill Development Sessions (Training)
We are really excited about our Skill Development Sessions this season, and think we have a fantastic offer for our players. The sessions will be Indoors at ASB Sports centre (except for the first 2), and we will have a Professional Coach leading them.
Dates/Times and Locations:
All Grade 7 & 8 players are welcome, and will train together. The kids will go through 4 fun footballing activities, based on Station Rotation, and we will always finish the session with some small sided games. The Professional Coach and team coaches will lead these activities.
We will be looking to have a weekly theme and skill focus, which will be a core footballing skill we are focusing on. We welcome parents to support their children to practice these skills and provide encouragement and praise when the kids demonstrate this during a game We will share what we are working on each week with you.
