Wellington United

Men's Central League Team

The Wellington United Men's First team has a proud playing history in the historic National League, Chatham Cup and the domestic league competitions.

We have had the honour of seeing excellent footballers represent the O-ran-je over the years, players such as Wynton Rufer, Simon Elliot, Malcom Dunford, Billy Harris to name a few who all went on to represent New Zealand on the international stage.

In 2015, Wellington United signed a ground breaking Joint Venture agreement with the Wellington Phoenix, whereby the Wellington United first team's roster would now be filled by Phoenix Academy players. The goal of the partnership was to provide some of New Zealand's most promising younger players regular access to the highest levels of Club football, before making the move into National League and potentially a professional career.

In the new teams first Premier League game for the Orange and Blues, the average age of the squad was 16.5 years old.  That day they won 7-4 over the relegated Upper Hutt team that had come straight from the 2014 Central League competition. Two days later they beat Petone FC reserves 12-0.

2015 was a special year for the young lads. Not only did they win the Premier League over a very strong Karori side they also won the play-off series against Team Taranaki to gain promotion to the Men's Central League for 2016!
