Wellington United Diamond winger Dani Ohlsson has reached two significant milestones this season. A Hat-trick against Victoria University in the Kelly Cup bought up her 100th goal for the club, then three weeks later, against Victoria University again, this time in a W-League fixture she made her 100th appearance for Wellington United. She was presented with a poster marking these achievements before the game against Petone on Saturday.
Dani, a student studying accountancy and criminology at Victoria University, started kicking a ball around in the back yard with her brother when she was about 4 or 5. Then one of her dad's workmates was looking for a player for his girls team. So Dani joined the girls only Sunday league at North Wellington.
Family has been an important part of Dani's footballing life, with her parents, David & Rose attending every game and her brother encouraging her in her early years by allowing her to play football with him and his mates at school lunchtimes. Any doubts his friends may have had about playing with a girl were soon put to rest when Dani managed to break one of their pinkies with a shot!
Through friends at school she joined Wellington United in the 14th grade Nokouts team. A highlight of her time with this team wasn't just making friends, many of who she still plays with today, but also a trip to Canberra, Australia where the team was successful in winning the Kanga Cup, the largest youth football tournament in the Southern Hemisphere.
Moving school from Onslow to St Mary's saw her get to play in one of her more memorable games winning the Wellington schools final beating Hutt Valley High on penalties after being 2-0 down with six minutes to go before fighting back to 2-2. Dani scored the winning penalty.
Dani moved into the Sapphires (2nd team) in 2016. She instantly made her mark with the Sapphires scoring an incredible 27 goals in 16 games including six hat-tricks. The following season she won the golden boot again with 32 goals in 16 games as the Sapphires won the Capital Premier division. Her goalscoring and progress also saw her make her debut for the Diamonds where she managed six goals in 10 appearances.
Dani has also been a member of the Capital National Womens team for the last three seasons and in 2019 she was selected for the NZ Secondary Schools team that competed at the Dallas Cup in the USA. Dani won the teams MVP for the tournament.
Also a keen Futsal player she recently competed in the NZ Universities tournament for Victoria University, where they finished runner-up to Canterbury United's Futsal Fern laden side.
As well as her family Dani cites coaches Guilermo Schiltenwolf, Maika Ruyter-Hooley, Elliott Taylor and Juan Pablo Silva as having influenced her football and has really enjoyed learning from.
Congratulations Dani here's to the next 100 games and goals
