Saturday's W-League game against Wairarapa United saw Michaela (Mickey) Robertson make her 100th appearance for Wellington United. She marked the occasion with a goal, something that's not unusual when she plays having scored at a rate of almost a goal a game with an outstanding total of 98 in her 100 games!
Mickey started playing football when she was 8 years old for her local club Petone and played in the mixed grades, she stuck in the mixed grades for as long as possible, even staying back a year as she found it more fun and challenging playing alongside the boys. She eventually moved up and a couple of years later was playing in the 1st division with Petone when she came to the attention of Diamonds coach Guillermo Schitlenwolf.
Quote from Guille about what she showed etc
So after meeting Mickey's dad Tim for a coffee and explaining the pathway that Wellington United offered she joined the club in 2013 and quickly became a permanent fixture in the first team and from the off she showed she had a knack for scoring goals. When asked how she manages to score so many goals, she is quick to credit her team mates saying "they do the hard work I just have that bit of extra pace that allows me to finish the job". Her small size, Mickey is ?? tall is also something that helps as many opposition players underestimate her, for a player of her size many players and spectators are amazed at just how good she is in the air, in fact her favourite goal is a header that she scored when playing for New Zealand U20 against Tonga. She said she had jumped for the ball and made contact but it was only when she came down and landed on the keepers shoulders she realised that she had scored.
As well as that she rates any hat-trick she gets as a highlight and she's had nine of those for Wellington United, five of them involving more than the traditional three goals, her best being a seven goal haul in a 16-2 victory over Massey University.
It wasn't just Wellington United that spotted her talent, Paul Grieg, who was then coach of the Capital Football team got her involved there and she has gone on to play 34 games and score 11 goals for them
She was also selected for NZ U20 and the FFDP, she is still part of the FFDP but has decided to return to Wellington
The family atmosphere of Wellington United was a key reason she came back to the club and also an appreciation of the support the club has given her over the years PEC Zwolle
