Is there anything Jemma Robertson can't do? On Saturday she needed just 15 minutes to net a hat-trick to take her season tally of goals to 15 and by half time she had gone off injured. Coach Maika Ruyter-Hooley must have been relieved when she found out it was only a minor injury and not another to add to Diamonds long list this season.
Ruyter-Hooley had to make changes to the back line with Hope Gilchrist away and Sarah Alder being the latest to be added to the injury list. Courtney Stone and 15 year old Anna McCarthy joined Rosie Wild in the back line, while NZ U20 Charlotte Wilford Carroll came back into the midfield ahead of Nea Blackham.
Western Suburbs started with NZ U17 player Macey Fraser up front and ex Diamond and NZ U17 Maya Hahn in midfield, but these two had surprisingly little influence on the game and although Wests were up against it from the start, this was probably the best Western Suburbs side Diamonds have come up against since Wests were promoted in to the W-League in 2017.
Diamonds attacking line with Jemma Robertson and Dani Ohlsson on the wings and Emma Main in the centre it is a formidable front line and by the time Ohlsson crossed for Robertson to net the first they had already hit the post, had two near misses and forced a couple of saves from Wests keeper, Aliana Santos. The second goal was almost a carbon copy of the first, although this one started with goalkeeper, Molly Simons, who sent a long kick downfield, the ball bounced and found its way to Dani Ohlsson who again crossed for Robertson to make it 2-0.
Five minutes later Robertson cut in from her left wing position and fired a shot from the edge of the penalty area to give her a second hat-trick for the season. 10 minutes later after another cross from Ohlsson, Robertson found herself underneath a Wests player and picked up enough of a knock that she went off.
A minute after the restart, Emma Main, who had had plenty of shots in close, but none had fallen for her tried a shot from around 30 meters out which found its way to the top corner, despite the best efforts of Santos in the Wests goal.
It was now 4-0 and it wasn't even half time!
In the second half Wests came back into it and while they didn't create many chances they played some nice football and managed to frustrate the Diamonds. Ruyter-Hooley gave a debut to promising young striker Pepi Oliver-Bell in the 55th minute and it wasn't long before she managed to get the ball into the net but it was ruled out for offside.
It wasn't until the 76th minute when Diamonds scored again, with Dani Ohlsson taking on and beating a defender before managing to get her shot in from an acute angle to make it 5-0.
Diamonds stay top off the table on goal difference, but Palmerston North Marist reduced that by one as they beat North Wellington 6-0
