Elite 2 - 2 TFTs Write-up by Damo Well at least the weather turned it on today… back to the field of nightmares for the Elite. The pre-game mood was pretty humble, until the despair of being unable to field an 11 a side team became apparent. Ryan out, Gansey (MIA) with his mate, and just the 10 remaining players trying to work out who wants to play CB. Short of the usual masters boys this week and ring ins – this was going to be a long game. Up steps Patrick into the heart of the defense (much to Adams relief) and we now have some sort of starting formation! Much of the changing room chat was would the savior from last week (Niall) step up again this week… or would he suffer a goal drought? Heading out on to the pitch, perfect playing conditions, studs definitely not required today lads! (this is how I remember it looked?) The Elite for the usual serious warm up and pitch inspection, passing the Olympic lads (15 players) quickly introducing themselves (ring ins) with some players looking like they were fresh off their mothers milk! The mighty Elite (all 10 of us) were not going to be worried, for we “never loose to Olympic” (isn’t that right CJ). As the game was about to get underway, we heard from the MIA Gansey – stuck in traffic in the Hutt after coming back from a bender in Greytown, the 10man Elite will have to play on! We started a little jittery but then settled it down to play some nice football, going 1-0 up with Adam sneaking in a nice little goal on the far post after some great build up play. Patrick and Tim were settling in nice at the back of the park (sorry Pat don’t think you will be back up front for a while) and the Elite looked to create several chances up front with Ross chasing down everything, but not being able to find the target this week (yet). Then out of no where the Ginger Assassin decided to pull on Gregs old boots and give the Elite the 11th player we were desperately missing. After only a couple of minutes on the park he had already struck the upright (if he had scored, well you can imagine the stories), but the Elite had now conceded a goal at the other end of the pitch 1 – 1. The remainder of the 1st half played out with chances to the strikers with some great over the top and through balls from Stu in the middle and Clem, Niall, Roger attacking wide play (well not Crespos wing). The new boys in the back had done a pretty decent job first half, allowing the midfield some decent ball to play (in between the cricket pitch, bobbles, mud and rubbish). Not to mention we were winning our 50/50 tackles (60/40) The Elite had a pretty solid first half. Gansey had now appeared from the bushes and was ready to take his position on the field. However man of the match Tim had done enough to secure his left back role in the second half and Gasney was thrust into left mid (yes that’s right!) Crespo took a well earned breather to go organize the hoodies and Cory / Rory started on the right, allowing the Frenchman his long wait upfront. The second half started to open up as there were some tired legs around the pitch (both teams) and even the ref was starting to make mistakes. It looked as if the Elite might struggle to break the deadlock with chances appearing but not to the same extent as in the 1st half. Adam was looking for his second, but was denied off the line by a diving header, Clem and Ross both had their shots blocked or just off target – the Olympic goal looked as if it might not be broken… Step up the real savoir (Ross), after being called for a dubious offside minutes earlier, he managed to this time chase down a through ball, beat the keeper and start the sideline fans chanting!
Unfortunately it was not to be the Elites day, with chances still appearing to both teams, the Elites through proper football and 60/40 challenges, and Olympics through soft free kicks and long range efforts – the Elite goal was eventually penetrated. Dave had no chance with the slow motion looping shot, after having already pulled off some great finger tip saves, blocks, horrible back passes and all round decent display of goal keeping. So as you can imagine to your surprise the Elite finished with a 2 – 2 draw! This weeks points (apart from Tim) were a little hard to dish out special mention to Crespo for finally organizing the hoodies (even if mine is already in need of repair) and helping out the Elite when we were a man down 3 Points – Tim (solid game, enough said) 2 Points – Patrick (slotted in nicely to his new role at CB) 1 Point – Stu (great distribution and a full 90 ) Wellington United 6-1 Lower Hutt Mooseknuckles Saturday 9th July, 2:30pm Kick-off Write-up by Niall The game was on a knife-edge (thanks Roger). It was 5-1 to the Elite. The Elite needed something, nay, someone, to step up and take the game by the scruff of its neck. Someone to lead the Elite to its destiny. A hero, if you will. A modern day Archie Gemmill: CJ turned to the sidelines, and gazed upon the wonder, the glory and majesty of Niall. He knew what to do. He knew. CJ called upon the big man, “Get us a goal Niall, please save us”. The sense of pleading and desperation in his eyes was obvious. But, Niall wasn’t going to let those emotions stand in is way. The savior was ready. Before gracing the field with his presence, Niall considered some of the action he witnessed just minutes prior: Even the Elites defense had its moments: Niall, put this out of his mind and focused on the task at hand. He stepped onto field, ignoring the daggers from the salty Frenchman, whose desire to play upfront was only too apparent. To warm up and get into the game, Niall took a wonderful pass from Adam (more on that wee beauty later) first time and laid it off to Pat, whose deft chip almost had our hero in for a quick goal. Alas, the defender clattered Niall with a challenge that our esteemed referee deemed fair: Not to be denied, Niall persevered. A few minutes later, Adam floated a glorious ball over the top of the defense. The crowd held its breath. Niall chested the ball down in his stride, beat the last defender with a deft touch, and then rifled the ball into the bottom corner. It looked a little like this (but better): And that was that. Game over. 6-1 Elite. MVP Points: 3 – Adam – you will never see a better assist than that. Awesome. 2 – Ross – got dragged off, allowing Niall to come on and score the goal of the season 1 – CJ – did a good job correctly calling Nialls goal onside. Kei te a Pokiri kataha pūrongorongo (Soccer match day Report) Whanganui-a-Tara Unaititi Runga --- 0 (Wellington United Elite) Ko Te Tūranganui-o-Kupe --- 0 (Seatoun AFC well the beach or headland) Write-up By Steveo Noticed it was Maori language week so best we start with the formals first... Last Friday I had just finished breasting my last Swan and was quietly settling in for a few drams with my hunting buddies. I started setting up our Wi-Fi to connect to Sky Go for the rugby at the lodge, it was then I glanced at my inbox and saw the sea of red emails from the elites coaching staff... The words “Dire” and “Only 8 available” made me re-evaluate what was special to me, what made me into what I live for in a winters Saturday and made it difficult to stand up on a Sunday.. The text was made to Disco Dave I was back from the Wairarapa to stand together with my other brothers from other mothers to do battle with Seatoun. Opposition: - Seatoun AFC Home ground: - Seatoun Park Latitude: -41°19'31.44" Longitude: 174°50'2.76" Registered players: - 120 including youth teams Chatham Cup Winners: - 1957, 58 The ambience and thinking be known of a Central defender:- The stage was set and the weather had come to the party. Slight nor'wester 5 – 10 Knots indicating wind flow moving across the harbour from scorching bay’s northern point meeting pushed upward draft air from Miramar. This air convergence is staged directly on top of Seatoun Park and known areas east of the park. Kick off was for 1430Hrs and there was no noticeable stratocumulus in the sky. Sun strike facing north was of a high probability in the 80 – 90 percentiles. Facing North after 1500 hrs indicated a significant risk of losing the football when movement was from west to east notation. Especially if the football is rising above the 50 year old poplar trees staged on the western side of the ground. The pitch caused much discussion from the individuals who were on time to avoid the late fine. Penetrometer reading (kicking ground with any footwear while sitting mid stationary on a treated half round timber) was a Soft 5 to 6 meaning it was an average track with some significant give in it... The visual inspection (done by stretching limbs and running around on it like mercats) gave out the usual yearly comments. It’s “Long” and “wide” and its shit down the southern side. Points to note for future games is to check for small branches and twigs southern western side of pitch, potential OSH issue from sliding tackles or impediments from sharp objects. Eastern southern side of pitch is very deceiving given the amount of sun present on it, poor drainage and or lack of care from the grounds staff has created a mud bog with grass seed sprinkled on top that can only be seen or experienced while traveling over it... First Half:- Dec’s incredibly quiet. Adam missing a sitter, then playing with the ball between his legs. Ants pushing a player over who was already falling. Clems WWE slide shift takeout of the keeper. Ross and Pat moving in Unisom. Oranges:- Talk of smashing the keeper again or taking a hit from the keeper to get a pen... Forwards weren’t keen on that. Get ball wide side line then look for cut in ball. Seatoun looked fudged with no subs. Second Half:- Ganesy sounding like a faulty air conditioning unit. Damo heading the ball with 2 or 3 players around him, spawning Salmon... Seatoun’s only decent header over the bar then a few of them breaking down to get a rest. Adam and Ryan dominating parts of the middle and moving the ball left to right across the back possession football! Fulltime / Beers/ Lies Ants with the scribe this week no doubt we hit 3 figures with most of us on pinger fines now... Good to see the elite drinking away and the Seatoun lads and supporters welcoming us there that’s what the beautiful game is all about… Points:- 3 for Adam, he moved the ball around got a good strike on target and generally was doing the box to box thing those midfield roosters do. Good judgement late in the game subbing and moving players around. 2 for CJ, reading the ball well realised the opposition’s strengths and game play early and disseminated this info to the troops. Good last minute headers late in the game. 1 for Ross. Ran for everything that was available up front and applied pressure on their defence, never looked like giving up. |
