It's been coming. Wellington United have been playing well, much better than belies their league position at the foot of the table, but the rub of the green hasn't been going their way with six losses by one goal so far this season. There have been near misses, crossbars and some good goalkeeping that have denied them in the past. Today was different, you got that feeling when United opened the scoring in the ninth minute through a sublime piece of skill from Leo Villa. He received the ball with his back to goal he flicked the ball up and to the his right and then hit it with the outside of his foot towards the far post where Cole Hosking Berge headed it over the line.
The first have was reasonably close with Wellington United dominating slightly but not capitalising on this so went into the sheds at half time with just a 1-0 lead. It took just two minutes of the second half for them to increase the lead. New Argentinean signing, Ignacio Deipenau, making his home debut, came on for George Barbarouses and started what would be an eventful half for him with a well taken goal. Three minutes later he found himself in the book for diagreeing with the referee's decision.
Wellington United enjoyed more of the possession and Leo Villa was controlling the midfield and playing some lovely through balls. United were just not making the most of them and and with 2-0 being the most dangerous lead in football it was starting to worry the United fans.
It changed in the 79th minute when Ignacio Deipenau made another darting run into the North Wellington half, their captain, Cam Wardlaw, chasing beside him raised his arms as he tried to keep up with Deipenau's pace, unfortunately his elbow connected with Deipenau's nose and saw Deipenau finish his day with a trip to hospital with a suspected broken nose. Meanwhile as Cam Wardlaw already had a yellow card, he was invited to take early ablutions by the referee. Although several were left questioning why it wasn't a straight red.
From the resultant free kick, Leo Villa hit a peach of a ball into the top corner of the net to make it 3-0 and it looked as that was game over for the day, but Schiltenwolf made a double substitution in the 87th minute bringing on Gaston Junca and Cared Blackham for Michael McCutcheon and Cole Hosking Berge. The fresh legs proved to much for the North Wellington defence as both players scored by breaking through the defence and beating the keeper in one on one situations to give Wellington United a much needed 5-0 victory.
