Say the name Chas Lawrence in Wellington football circles and you will likely hear Wellington Olympic mentioned in the same breath, after all he has played 245 games, won a Chatham Cup and two Central League titles with them. However, a lesser known fact about Lawrence is that he started his senior career with Wellington United in 2002.
His debut for Wellington United came about when Chas was training with the first team which included his father, Imre Foldi. Foldi made 92 appearances and scored 39 goals for United. It was this connection and a close friendship with the Minshull family that attracted Chas to the opportunity at Wellington United.
Having known Wellington United coach Guillermo Schiltenwolf, from when he was assistant coach at Olympic and they won the Central League in 2016, Chas was enticed by the opportunity to work with Guillermo again. Along with the opportunity to be a key member of the team and help build a good culture and get United back to where they belong.
Guillermo has built a fantastic family culture on the women’s side of the club in the last nine years and is looking to replicate this on the men’s side of the club. This resonated with Chas, who besides his father’s connections to Wellington United also wanted to play for the club that very close family friends Bobby, and his son Ian (Minty) Minshull had been key members off before they both passed away in late 2018.
Chas, who besides his Chatham Cup winners medal and two Central League titles also has won the Venus Shield (Capital Premier) with North Wellington, is looking forward to replicating that glory with Wellington United.
Wellington United is thrilled to welcome Chas back to where he started his senior career and look forward to a successful year.
