A strike in referees time from Wellington United captain, Cam Stephan, gave United the three points in a tight battle with Stop Out at Newtown Park on Saturday.
It was a dismal day with rain pelting down as third placed Stop Out kicked off against second placed United. Stop Out had an early chance but it was Wellington United who opened the scoring after just six minutes when Coco Heredia gathered a stray ball and coolly slotted the ball past Sam Wright in the Stop Out goal.
Stop Out evened up the score in the 28th minute at a corner, keeper Crawford Plenderleith pushed the ball out but only as far as Jerram Tuck who fired a low shot into the net.
The conditions were testing for both teams, although despite this the spectacle was quite watchable and chances were being created by both teams and 1-1 at half time was probably a fair reflection of the game.
The second half continued in much the same way, both teams dealing well with the challenging conditions and creating chances but being unable to convert. There was drama in the 70th minute, it was hard to tell what happened from the stands but it resulted in Wellington United coach Guillermo Schiltenwolf getting his marching orders.
As both teams pushed for a winner, they both came close but it was United who in the second minute of referees time created a chance when Leo Villa played a clever chip over a Stop Out defender, allowing Cole Hosking-Berge space near the corner. His cross found captain Cam Stephan who hit a shot into the bottom of the net to give United a 2-1 lead.
It wasn't the end of things, two minutes later United's opening goalscorer, Coco Heredia, picked up a second yellow card and was sent off. It didn't effect the outcome though as United held on for a 2-1 win.
