Wellington United Diamonds put in a comprehensive display beating rivals Wairarapa United 5-1 at Newtown Park on Saturday.
The win sees them into the semi-final of the Kate Sheppard Cup for the third time in a row emulating their achievements from 2018 & 19 (there was no competition in 2020).
It was a true team effort, shown by having five different goal scorers. Dani Ohlsson opened the scoring in 24th minute when she cut in from the right wing and chipped the Wairarapa United keeper, Grace Minnis. Minnis did get a hand to it but all she could do was push the ball in to the top off the net.
Six minutes later Ohlsson turned provider when she whipped in a cross from the right wing which fell to Nea Blackham who cooly slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the goal. A minute later it was three when left back Zoe Barrott reached the byline and pulled a cross back which Pepi Olliver-Bell managed to steer in from an incredibly acute angle.
Wairarapa were pushing forward and trying to create chances but weren't having any luck getting past the back line of Hope Gilchrist, Zoe Barrott, Rosie Wild and Francesca Grange. On the few occasions they did manage to break this line they were met by some brave keeping from Molly Simons.
3-0 up at half time would normally be seen as comfortable but this was cup football and Wairarapa are a team that can score goals having scored 23 in the previous two rounds of the cup. However it was Diamond Emma Main that was next on the scoresheet with what was probably the goal of the day. Just a minute into the half Dani Ohlsson fired in yet another cross from the right wing, with the ball falling behind her, Main was able to get her foot back and hook a shot into the back of the net to make the score 4-0.
Wairarapa to their credit were continuing to push forward and were rewarded when a rare defensive mistake gave Wairarapa striker TJ Lyne-Lewis, an open goal to make it 4-1. Diamonds weren't finished though and had several chances and it was Ohlsson again, who was having a superb day on the right wing who crossed again and this time the ball was met by Jemma Robertson to make it 5-1.
Wairarapa United had a chance to pull a goal back from the penalty spot in the last 10 minutes but TJ Lyne-Lewis's shot hit the cross bar and went out for a goal kick.
Diamonds are joined in the semi-finals by Coastal Spirit, Hamilton Wanderers and the winner of Western Springs v Eastern Suburbs. The draw will be done by NZ Football on twitter at 1pm today
