The first half of the season, Wellington United couldn't get a win for trying, with six single goal defeats seeing them rooted to the bottom of the table despite having a positive goal difference. A common mantra from the players and fans was the results will come and thats what they have been doing with four wins in a row, the latest a 2-0 win over second place Wainuiomata at Newtown Park on Saturday in the Capital Premier division.
It was a satisfying win for United, who had gone done 3-2 in the reverse fixture in Wainuiomata earlier in the season, despite leading 2-0 with 15 minutes to go. Wainui were on a roll having won seven in a row and beaten league leaders Upper Hutt City 2-0 the week before.
It was a fairly even first half with no goals scored, both teams having some chances but good keeping from Crawford Plenderleith in the United goal and Reed Collingwood in the Wainuiomata goal kept the score at 0-0. Wainuiomata play an effective long ball game and towards the end of the half Wellington United were starting to do the same rather than their usual passing game, no doubt coach Guillermo Schiltenwolf's words at half time would have addressed this and United came out in the second half playing in their usual style.
They had a couple of real chances, Nacho Deipineau hit the post with a shot, he picked up the rebound and directed the ball the other way just to see it hit the other post! He atoned for this not long after when he hit a stunning shot from 30 meters out and found the back of the net.
United confirmed the three points when substitute, Birhanu Taye broke through into the penalty area and cooly slotted the ball past Collingwood to record his first goal for United, making the score 2-0. A win that moves United up to fifth in the table
