After last weeks loss to Wairarapa United, Diamonds with an almost full strength team bounced back with an 8-1 win over W-League newcomers Victoria University at Boyd Wilson Arena on Saturday.
With the University Futsal championships over, Diamonds had Zoe Barrott, Sophie Dijkstra, Francesca Grange and Natalie Olson back, while Rosie Wild was still away and Emma Main and Jemma Catherwood are on the road to recovery from injuries.
It took Diamonds just 10 minutes to open the scoring through Pepi Olliver-Bell, two minutes later Jemma Robertson extended her W-League scoring streak to 15 games when she made it 2-0. University had met Diamonds already this season in the Kelly Cup and Diamonds ran out 9-0 winners on the day and with those two quick goals it looked as if it may be similar today.
However University were a lot more organised than the Kelly Cup game and were making Diamonds work hard for the ball, defending well and managed to keep the score to 2-0 at half time.
Just like the first half two goal in two minutes came the way for the Diamonds, the first to Hope Gilchrist then Jemma Robertson had her second and the score was now 4-0. 20 minutes later defender Hope Gilchrist got her second with what was probably the goal of the game when she launched a high shot from 30 meters out that sailed over the keeper into the net.
The relentless defending that University had been doing was starting to catch up with them, especially in the last 10 minutes. While they did get a consolation goal through Nicole Baird, it was Diamonds who added three goals, two for Nat Olson who kept up her record of scoring in every game she has played in this season and Sarah Alder with her first goal since July 2019.
