Two goals, one three minutes from the end of ordinary time and one two minutes from the end of extra time gave Diamonds a 3-2 win over Waterside Karori in round two of the Kate Sheppard Cup on Saturday at Newtown Park.
It was a position that the Diamonds really shouldn't have found themselves in, enjoying the majority of the possession throughout the game, however they found the Waterside Karori defence hard to break down and didn't create many chances.
It was Waterside Karori that opened the scoring three minutes into the second half through Eve Barry. The lead lasted only three minutes before Jemma Robertson made one of her trade mark runs down the left flank cutting in towards goal and despite keeper Ariana Gray getting a hand to the ball she was unable to stop the shot. The goal marked Robertson's 100th goal for the club.
One of Waterside Karori's main threats is American forward Kayley Ward and there was a great battle between her and Diamonds fullback Rosie Wild throughout the game, with Wild managing to get the upper hand for most of the game. In the 63rd minute however is was Wild's hand that the ball hit in the penalty area giving away a penalty which Ward cooly slotted past Molly Simons to make it 2-1.
As the game went on, Diamonds continued to enjoy the lions share of possession but still had issues creating chances. But in the 87th minute, Emma Main who had come on for Jemma Robertson got the ball inside the penalty area and sent a lovey chip over the keeper to make it 2-2 and send the game in to extra time.
Extra time continued the same with Diamonds enjoying more possession but seeming to lack any urgency for scoring goals. There's an unwritten rule in football that ex players will usually score against you and that proved to be the case when ex Waterside player, Diamonds defender Courtney Stone, took a shot from just inside the half which flew into the top of the net to give Diamonds a 3-2 lead with just two minutes left of extra time and send Diamonds into the next round of the cup.
