Diamonds may have come away with a 5-1 victory, but they were made to work hard for it by a determined Seatoun side that was looking for their first victory over United since 2015.
It was Diamonds that dominated the early possession and territory and they went ahead in the 13th minute with youngster Pepi Olliver-Bell netting her first goal for the team. After this Diamonds tried to settle into their usual quick short passing game but Seatoun managed to disrupt them and they never really got into their normal rhythm.
The tactics paid off for Seatoun when in the 41st minute they latched on to a poor clearance from the Diamonds defence and Sarah Marden broke through to slot past Molly Simons and even up the scores going into the break.
Diamonds coach Maika Ruyter-Hooley didn't make any substitutions at half time but she did make a tactical change bringing Jemma Robertson in to the centre forward position and moving Pepi Olliver-Bell to the wing. It took just 10 minutes for this change to pay off when Robertson latched on to a through ball and despite the close attentions of a Seatoun defender got a shot away that went in at the far post.
Diamonds started to relax a bit more and play their natural game, Seatoun were still making them work hard for it but weren't able to keep up the intensity they had in the first half. Charlotte Wilford Carroll made the result secure in the 68th minute with a long range effort.
With Palmerston North Marist, hot on the Diamonds heels in a race for the title with only one goal separating the team, goals are becoming vital. Diamonds know this and seemed to struggle and get frustrated when things didn't fall their way but when they relax and play their normal game, goals will come and thats what happened with two goals in the last two minutes, the first to Wilford Carroll and the second from the penalty spot to Jemma Robertson , who takes her season talley to 24.
Seatoun, who stuck with the same 11 throughout they game (they only had one sub on the bench) fought well, but were unable to keep up with the superior fitness of the Diamonds.
Diamonds, meanwhile stay on top of the table by just the one goal after Palmerston North Marist beat Western Suburbs 4-0
