DIAMONDS MINE SOUTH AFRICA FOR TALENT
Friday 24 May 2019
Words : Dave Webster, WUAFC Media
There is no question that this is a tough season for Wellington United, going through a rebuilding phase after the end of their partnership with the Phoenix, and bidding to retain their position in the Central League. Having a high turnover of players due to a variety of reasons from sudden departures for family emergencies, players leaving as they are unwilling or unable to step up to the challenge that the club faces, hasn’t helped.
Just like when you’re in front of goal, you need to take your chances when they are presented. So when Diamonds coach Rafa Christians learnt through one of his South African contacts that 19 year old Jared Wyngaard was keen to come to New Zealand it wasn’t a chance he was going to let slip by. Christians says “He will provide an immediate impact and is one for the future. Jared gives us an option on a position we couldn’t find locally. Playing in the space in front of the back four isn’t simple, you need the physical ability and a high level of understanding, Jarred has this, he is quick, reads the game well and transitions at the appropriate times”
Wyngaard hails from Cape Town, where he had been playing and working with LifeZone FC, a club that is also a NGO providing football and life skills programs in low socio economic areas. Christians says “…his work shows he puts other before himself and will help the club as it develops a culture of hard work and selfless play.
Wyngaard says “Wellington’s great, although the change in temperature from Cape Town has taken a bit of getting used to, but its fantastic and I’m really looking forward to playing and developing with Wellington United”
We welcome Jared to our family and hope it’s the start of a long and successful relationship.
Jared will be in the team for the match against our rivals Miramar Rangers at David Farrington Park on Saturday, KO 2:30pm
