Jemma Robertson is on fire! Continuing on from last season where she scored 20 goals in all competitions and won the teams player of the year and players player of the year awards. A hat-trick on Saturday against Seatoun has taken her to six goals from the first three league games this season.
While Seatoun's players were making all the noise before kick off about taking the game to United, it was pretty much all Diamonds from the start and they had several early chances. It was Dani Ohlsson that opened the scoring in the ninth minute beating ex Diamond, Natasha Ingram, in the Seatoun goal from an acute angle.
Two minutes later Jemma Robertson had her first when she latched on to a through ball, leaving the Seatoun defence behind with her pace and cooly slotting it past the keeper. Diamonds continued to dominate and keeper Molly Simons had little to do. The solid back line of Rosie Wild, Sarah Alder and Zoe Barrott was stopping any slightly promising Seatoun attack and providing good balls to the midfield and forwards. The forward line of Robertson, Ohlsson and Olson were running the Seatoun defence ragged, especially Dani Ohlsson whose quick running forced Seatoun to make a tactical change just 27 minutes in taking off Jessica Drysdale and moving another ex Diamond in Hannah Wignall to the left back position.
On the half hour mark, Robertson was fouled just outside the area, her resulting free kick beat Ingram in the Seatoun goal but came off the crossbar and defender Rosie Wild followed up ensuring the ball ended up in the back of the net. Robertson got her second in the 43rd minute, from the kick off Seatoun had a rare attack and Natalie Johnstone managed to pull one back for the hosts. This gave Seatoun a bit of a lift and they really pressed for the next couple of minutes until half time.
The second half was more of the same, although Diamonds were clearly the more dominant side they felt they could have played better, captain Sarah Alder saying "the pitch was very heavy going and stopped us playing up to the level we'd expect to" Seatoun who had come of a 8-1 hammering from Palmerston North Marist the week before were probably quite happy that Diamonds didn't play up to their expected level.
There was one more goal to come and it was a bizzare incident. Nat Olson broke down the left wing and crossed to Jemma Robertson who met the ball on the penalty spot and put it past the keeper for her hat-trick, or so she thought. The Assistant Ref was waving his flag and after consulting him, the referee disallowed the goal but pointed to the spot for a penalty as Robertson had been fouled while taking her shot! Robertson made no mistake from the spot to make it 5-1.
The game ended on a bit of a sour note with Seatoun getting frustrated and kicking out at the opposition, a particular bad late challenge on Nat Olson saw her fracture her ankle and she'll be out for 4-6 weeks. Unfortunately it was so late both the AR and ref were watching where the ball was and neither saw the incident. Diamonds suffered another injury when Zoe Barrott clashed with a Seatoun player in a 50/50 challenge and had to go off with a leg injury.
The win keeps Diamonds in second place on goal difference from Palmerston North Marist, who they are playing at Newtown Park next Saturday
