Wellington United Diamonds saw off a strong challenge from Seatoun to maintain their bid to retain the W-League title.
Coach Maika Ruyter-Hooley had made a couple of changes for squad rotation purposes giving starts to Nea Blackham and Natalie Olson, while Jemma Robertson started from the bench and Sammi Preval had the week off.
It took just six minute for Diamonds to open the scoring when Dani Ohlsson fired a low shot from the penalty area. Eight minutes later they had doubled their score when Nat Olson kept up her impressive goalscoring record this season with her eighth goal in as many games. It looked as if it was going to be a hard day at the office for Seatoun as they struggled to contain Dani Ohlsson on the wing and Diamonds really should have had a couple of more goals, hitting the post once and their shooting boots letting them down on a few more occasions.
Seatoun reorganised and started to push Diamonds for every ball, the fact they are currently bottom of the league, belies the quality of some of the players they have. But while they stepped up and started to frustrate Diamonds, they didn't really create many chances, with Diamonds keeper Molly Simons, not having much to do, although she did go for a run out of her goal area in the second half which had Diamonds supporters with their hearts in their mouths.
Nea Blackham netted in the 60th minute after the ball bounced around the six yard area and she managed to get a foot to it and poke it into the net. Sarah Alder who had started on the bench came on for the last 15 minutes and played up front, she thought she had made it 4-0 with a nice shot only for it to be called offside.
Diamonds weren't finished and it was who else but Jemma Robertson that completed the scoring with goal in the second minute of referees time, which takes her tally for the club to 99 and even more incredible extends her run of scoring in consecutive W-League games to 17
The win keeps Diamonds in 3rd place but just three points behind Wairarapa United and Palmerston North Marist, who they meet at Newtown Park next Saturday.
