Wairarapa United must be sick of visiting Wellington United. Eight times over the last two seasons, Paul Ifill, has bought his team over the hill to face Wellington United and the two goals they got on Saturday are the most they've had to show for it. Not that these are easy games for the Diamonds, Since the demise of Upper Hutt, Wairarapa have been their most consistent challenger for the league and finished runners up to the Diamonds last season on goal difference.
Wairarapa United had Dani Turton back from university in the USA, and had added an old Diamonds foe in Kennedy Bryant, formerly of Upper Hutt City. Diamonds had made three signings in the off season, all from Waterside Karori, Sisters, Katie & Zoe Barrott and Courtney Stone. Zoe started the game while Katie and Courtney started on the bench.
Diamonds who were coming off the back of an upset 1-0 loss to Petone in the Kelly Cup last week were determined to make amends for this and opened the scoring after 15 minutes when a corner had found its way to Charlotte Wilford Carroll on the far side of the box, her cross back in was met by Jemma Robertson who made it 1-0 with a header in to the top of the net.
Eight minutes later it was 2-0 when Kelsey Wilkinson managed to get the ball over the line from close range. Wairarapa Unietd pulled one back on the half hour mark. After an injury break, the drop ball restart was sent into the Diamonds penalty area and they were caught napping as Florence MacIntyre lobbed the ball into the net.
Emma Main came on at half time for Diamonds and within four minutes had the ball in the back of the net when she managed to help guide it past Courtney Norman in the Wairarapa United goal. The scoring didn't stop there with Dani Ohlsson putting the Diamonds 4-1 up in the 73rd minute. A minute later Wairarapa United's Sam Whyte spotted Diamonds keeper Molly Simons off her line and lobbed the ball in from about 25 meters out to make it 4-2
Diamonds manager Alice Cooke-Harvie said "it was a tight physical battle that we expected. We were happy with the way the team defended and were clinical in front of goal"
