As the mist rolled over the hill and snaked its way down to Petone Memorial Park on Saturday, Wellington United Diamonds shone through in a tough game against a well organised Petone side.
It was a bit of sweet revenge for the Diamonds who had suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of Petone in the Kelly Cup just two weeks previously. That game had been significant for Petone being very well organised, talking a lot and sticking to their game plan. It was much the same in this game. A big difference this time was the maturity in which the Diamonds reacted to the pressure. In the Kelly Cup game they got frustrated and visibly annoyed when the ball didn't run their way. This time they were a lot more composed and patience, knowing that if they stuck to their game plan the goals would come.
It was in the 56th minute when the first goal came, a through ball split the defence who had been watching Dani Ohlsson who the ball had seemed destined for, they didn't notice Jemma Robertson sitting a little deeper who burst through picked up the ball and rounded the keeper to make it 1-0.
Petone did get the ball in the net shorty after from a corner but it was ruled out for handball. Petone's game plan had been working but it was quite intensive and the players were starting to tire which led to some late challenges. One of them on Emma Main about 30 meters out led to the next goal.
Main stepped up to take the free kick and her screamer of a shot hit the underside of the crossbar. It bounced out and Dani Ohlsson, who was in an offside position slotted it home. While the Petone players started to argue about the off side with the ref, eagle eyed Assistant, Carl Tinsley signalled that the ball had indeed crossed line from the shot and it was 2-0 to United.
Four minutes later it was Jemma Robertson again who broke through the defensive line, this time taking the ball to the edge of the 6 yard area before squaring past the keeper to Nat Olson who hit the ball into the empty net.
The win takes the Diamonds to second on the table, behind Palmerston North Marist on goal difference
