Wellington United Diamonds bounced back from last weeks shock defeat to Waterside Karori, hammering a hapless North Wellington side 9-0 as they reclaimed the top spot in the W-League.
Diamonds had a storming start and could easily have been up 3-0 in the first five minutes but a combination of an uncharacteristic open goal miss from Dani Ohlsson, the crossbar and some good keeping from North Wellington's Brodie Ward-Johnston. Dani Ohlsson opened the scoring in the eight minute. Diamonds doubled their lead in the 22nd minute from an unlikely source, Asha Strom hit a cracker from 30 meters out which found the top corner for just her fourth goal for the Diamonds in her 93rd game.
Diamonds dominated the rest of the first half but like the week before were unable to find the back of the net, although unlike the week before it wasn't for lack of shooting, but like the first five minutes it was a combination near misses and good keeping that kept the score to just 2-0 at half time.
At half time coach Maika Ruyter-Hooley encouraged the team to keep going and said the goals will come. She was right and a 15 minute spell saw six goals scored, Charlotte Wilford Carroll started it with a brace, then Jemma Robertson, making her 100th appearance for the club joined in with a brace as well, While subs Kelsey Wilkinson and Katie Barrott also got in on the act
North Wellington who are newly promoted to the W-League this season had no answer and are getting somewhat of a baptism of fire, with only having gained one point so far this season. Captain Cushla Litchwark said after the game it had been hard and it gives them plenty to work on in training in the coming weeks.
Wellington United Diamonds completed the scoring in the second minute of added on time when Dani Ohlsson slotted in a cross from Jemma Robertson to finish the game 9-0 and put the team back in first place with a superior goal difference to Palmerston North Marist.
