2018 W-League & Kelly Cup Champions, Wellington United Diamonds, have moved to strengthen their squad for the 2019 season with the signing of forward Emma Main from Upper Hutt City and defender Sophie Dijkstra from Dunedin Technical.
Emma Main has been a long admired foe of Wellington United, playing her entire career with rivals Upper Hutt City, where she has scored an outstanding 90 goals in 66 appearances, Winning the W-League once and the Kelly Cup twice. Emma has also made 26 appearances for Capital Football in the National League and represented New Zealand at both U17 & U20 level.
Coach Guillermo Shiltenwolf said "Emma's pedigree speaks for itself. She brings heaps of experience to our family. Everyone at United is very please to have Emma with us"
Sophie Dijkstra is also known to Wellington United, being a member of the Dunedin Technical side that knocked Diamonds out of the Kate Sheppard Cup at the semi-final stage last season on their way to winning the trophy. Hailing from Dunedin, Sophie has played her career with Dunedin Technical as well as playing National League with Southern United. Schiltenwolf comments "Sophie is a new player coming from Dunedin Technical, she is adjusting to our playing philosophy. From what I've seen from her, she is an exciting player with lots to offer. We welcome Sophie to the United family"
Main cited the quality of coaching and competitive nature of the team as key reasons why she opted to sign for Wellington United. Dijkstra said that after playing against United in the Kate Sheppard Cup last season it was clear that they were a close team with a great family vibe that you just wanted to be part of and that made them the obvious choice when she moved to Wellington for University.
Wellington United Diamonds kick off their season on This Saturday (16th March) with a Kelly Cup game against Wairarapa United at Maidstone Park in Upper Hutt kick off 3pm
