First Kicks
Under 5s, Under 6s and Under 7s

Picture
Who First Kicks is suited to:
Our First Kicks programme is designed for young players who are new to football or in their early years of playing. This grade focuses on creating a fun, positive, and supportive environment where children can develop confidence, basic football skills, and a love for the game. Players are mixed-gender, and all abilities are welcome.

What a Typical Season Looks Like:
The junior football season typically aligns with School Terms 2 and 3 with additional football opportunities provided throughout the year through our Golazo Skills Sessions, Golazo Academy Sessions and School Holiday Programmes.

Players who are a part of the First Kicks programme take part in:
  • Saturday morning football sessions | At this age, sessions and games are designed to be short, fun, engaging, and inclusive, with a strong emphasis on enjoyment, movement, and skill development rather than competition or results.

Our Development Approach:
At Wellington United, our junior programme is built around creating positive first experiences in football.
For our First Kicks programme this means:
  • Learning through fun, engaging activities
  • Building confidence and coordination
  • Developing fundamental movement and ball skills
  • Encouraging teamwork, fair play, and respect

Our sessions align with New Zealand Football’s Whole of Football Plan 2.0, ensuring players develop at the right pace in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment. Above all, we want every child to feel welcomed, valued, and excited to come back each week.

Coaching & Player Support
Our First Kicks Programme is led and overseen by our qualified coaches. With the age of the children, and to help keep costs down, we do require coaching support from parents.

We provide:
  • Session plans and coaching guidance.
  • Ongoing support and resources for parent coaches.
  • A strong club community to lean on.

No previous coaching experience is required - just enthusiasm, positivity, and a willingness to help our young players enjoy their football journey.
