For the second week in a row Wellington United Diamonds put five goals past rivals Wairarapa United. Last week it was 5-1 in the Kate Sheppard Cup quarter final, this week it was 5-2 in the W-League.
Coach Maika Ruyter-Hooley was forced to make four changes to her starting line up from the week before with Zoe Barrott, Francesca Grange, Emma Main and Pepi Olliver-Bell all being involved with the youth Futsal championships. So Sophie Dijkstra, Courtney Stone, Sam Woolley and Sarah Alder were given starts.
The game started slowly and seemed to lack the intensity of the previous weeks cup game as the teams tried to sus each other out. It was Wairarapa United that opened the scoring in the 18th minute when TJ Lyne-Lewis headed a Kennedy Bryant corner in to the back of the net. The lead didn't last long when three minutes later Jemma Robertson found herself with the ball in the Wairarapa penalty area, she was heading away from goal but managed to turn herself around and fire a low shot in to the bottom corner.
Wairarapa United restored their lead six minutes later with a Kennedy Bryant free kick, it was a bitter-sweet moment for then as the challenge that led to the free kick resulted in Darby Lambert having to be carried off injured.
Ten minutes later the scores were even again when Wairarapa keeper, Grace Minnis, failed to hold a shot from Sarah Alder to make it 2-2.
The first half performance was a bit lacklustre from the Diamonds. However the second half performance was completely different and more like the display that had been seen the week before. Attacking from the kick off, Dani Ohlsson made it 3-2 when she latched on to a fantastic through ball from Sarah Alder. Four minutes later keeper Grace Minnis had the ball at her feet, but as it was from a back pass she was unable to pick it up, Jemma Robertson sized upon this chance and chased the ball down winning it and going round Minnis to knock the ball in to an open goal. Then six minutes from time, what was probably goal of the day, Asha Strom hit the ball from 25 meters out and it dipped just under the cross bar to make it 5-2.
The win moves Diamonds into second place, three points behind Palmerston North Marist with just three games left in the league season.
