Fun Football
Under 8s and Under 9s

Picture
Who Fun Football is suited to:
Our Fun Football programme is designed for players who have moved beyond First Kicks and are ready to further develop their football skills, confidence, and understanding of the game in a fun, supportive, and inclusive environment. Players are mixed-gender, and all abilities are welcome.

What a Typical Season Looks Like:
The junior football season typically aligns with School Terms 2 and 3 with additional football opportunities provided throughout the year through our Golazo Skills Sessions, Golazo Academy Sessions and School Holiday Programmes.

Players who are a part of the Fun Football programme take part in:
  • Weekly Training Sessions – Generally on Mondays at Akau Tangi Sports Centre
  • Weekly Game – Generally on Saturday Mornings on Newtown Park 2
  • Festival Days – Every 4 or so weeks there is a Festival Day, where we will either host a festival, or travel to another ground in Southern Wellington. Parents will be advised of Festivals in advance through club emails.
Sessions and games continue to focus on fun, skill development, teamwork, and confidence-building, while gradually introducing simple game understanding and decision-making.

Our Development Approach:
At Wellington United, our junior programme is built around creating positive and enjoyable football experiences.
For our Fun Football programme this means:
  • Learning through fun, game-based activities
  • Developing ball mastery and coordination
  • Building confidence and teamwork
  • Encouraging fair play, respect, and sportsmanship

Our sessions align with New Zealand Football’s Whole of Football Plan 2.0, ensuring players develop at the right pace in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment. Above all, we want every child to feel welcomed, valued, and excited to come back each week.

Coaching & Player Support
Our Fun Football Programme trainings are led and overseen by our qualified club coaches; with support from our Good Sorts (Volunteer) Parent Coaches. Game Days are overseen by our Good Sorts Parent Coaches.

We provide:
  • Session plans and coaching guidance.
  • Ongoing support and resources for parent coaches.
  • A strong club community to lean on.
No previous coaching experience is required - just enthusiasm, positivity, and a willingness to help our young players enjoy their football journey. We are always on the look out for more good sorts, so if you are keen to get involved please let us know :)
