Girls Golazo Academy Programme Overview
We run a full year programme to provide a high quality training and playing environment for up and coming female Youth players from around Wellington. Through our Golazo Academy Squads we seek to develop players, expose them to our playing philosophy and style, and then introduce them to senior football in a progressive and enjoyable way to help them seamlessly transition into Senior Football.
Players develop at different rates and ages and we strive to provide an environment that challenges our players both physically and mentally; importantly at a level that we believe is best suited for the player. Our environment allows players time to develop and adapt to women's football initially through shared training opportunities. Players who prove that they are ready for the next step are shoulder-tapped for opportunities with our Senior Women's Central League and Women's Premier League Teams throughout the season.
Our Golazo Academy Programmes are overseen by our Director of Football, Guillermo Schiltenwolf. Within Wellington, he generally needs no introduction, but for those newer to the scene here's a quick fire bio! Guille is one of only a handful of coaches in New Zealand who holds the FFA (Football Federation Australia) A Licence and in addition to this he holds CONMBOL A Licence. From leading Samoa's Under 17 Girls National team, to winning Men’s AND multiple Women’s Central League titles to Coaching in the New Zealand National leagues to working for FIFA alongside Argentina at the Women’s World Cup and everything in between, Guille has done it all! We are very lucky to have him as our Director of Football overseeing our Academy!
In 2025, we are pleased to announce the following options are available at Wellington United for competitive-minded female Youth Players:
Girls U16 Golazo Academy Squad
Staff | We are delighted to announce that Chelsea Tippen, our Female Youth Lead, will be the Head Coach for our U16 Golazo Academy Squad for 2025. Chelsea, who will also be leading our Sapphires (our Women's Premier League Team), has really shone since joining our club in 2024. This marked the first ever time in our Club's history where we took out both the Women's Central League and Women's Premier League titles in the same year, and Chelsea played a massive part in this! Her organised and targeting training sessions along with her squad rotation were instrumental in the Sapphires growth and success, and also helped see 9 of our players make the 2024 Capital Football Girls Youth National League Team. Chelsea holds the NZ C-Licence and is currently working towards the NZ B-Licence and is delighted to be taking the reigns of our U16 team in 2025!
Chelsea and our U16 Squad will be supported by an Assistant Coach (a Diamond player/coach), a Strength and Conditioning Coach, a Goal Keeping Coach and a Player Mentor.
Trainings and Games | The U16 Girls Squad will have football training contacts 2x per week. During Terms 2 and 3 the Squad will also have a Strength and Conditioning (S&C) Session 1x per week alongside a Game Day 1x per week. Whilst the Strength and Conditioning Training is optional and comes at an additional cost, we strongly recommend that all players take advantage of this session to ensure that their bodies are well conditioned to deal with the player loading that they will experience and more importantly to help prevent/reduce injuries. The Squad will be entered into the most competitive and appropriate league for their ongoing development. This could include senior women's capital leagues, mixed boys U15 regional leagues or the girls CDL competition, dependent upon the final makeup of the team and the appropriate level of competition for these players.
Squad Selection | The U16 Golazo Academy Squad of 14-16 players will be selected before the end of March. We know that trials provide a snapshot of a players ability and their coachability so we prefer to utilise trainings and games as a selection mechanism where able. If we are oversubscribed, we always endeavour to find a home for every player, whether that be within our playing pathway, or with other clubs.
Academy Apparel | All players will need to purchase Golazo Academy training Gear and Matchday Shorts and Socks. These will be available for purchase from our online Wellington United Club Shop in March. Items are generally delivered within the same week of purchase! Playing Tops will be provided.

End of Season Tournaments
At the end of the 2025 season, we are excited to announce that we will be taking a Girls U19 team to either the Napier U19 Tournament or the Christchurch U19 Tournament. This team will be selected from youth female players aged between 14 and 19; with priority being given to Wellington United Sapphires and Golazo Academy Players. Do you know, that we first played in the Christchurch Girls U19 Tournament in 2013! How many Diamonds, Sapphires and other senior players can you spot in the pictures below?
Dependent upon interest and availability, we may also enter the U17 Girls National Championships in Auckland. Over the past couple of seasons we have stopped entering this tournament due to its overlap with the National Youth Futsal Championships.
We do however revisit our options each year; so once our squads are finalised we will have this discussion with our players and parents. Whenever we don't enter these Tournaments, we do put forward keen players as guest players where appropriate.
These tournaments are real highlights for our girls as they get to test themselves against some of the top youth female footballers from around the country! In addition to playing in awesome tournaments, touring as a group is always a lot of fun, and we undertake a couple of adventures along the way. Even the flights are an adventure when on tour!

If you would like to be a part of our Golazo Academy, you can register below from Monday the 20th of January 2025!
In the meantime if you have any questions, please get in contact with us through [email protected].
