Wellington United's Mens and Womens teams both saw off challenges from lower league opposition to progress to the next round of the Chatham Cup and Kate Sheppard Cup respectively on Saturday.
The Diamonds started the day with four goals in the first 11 minutes to Jemma Robertson, Sophie Dijkstra, an Own goal and Pepi Olliver-Bell and it looked like Kapiti Coast United could be in for a hard day and double figures seemed likely. However the depleted KCU team managed to fight back and made Diamonds work hard for more goals, Pepi Olliver-Bell added to her total in the 20th minute. A rare goal from Asha Strom in the 42nd minute made it 6-0. Strom doesn't score many goals but when she does they are memorable this one being a strike from about 20 meters out into the top corner.
Capital Premier side Kapiti Coast United can be pretty proud with there second half performance with some great defending managing to keep Diamonds scoreless until the 87th minute when Hope Gilchrist headed in from a corner. Natalie Olson completed the day with a goal right on full time to make it 8-0
In the Chatham Cup, United took on Capital 1 side Stokes Valley, it was the first time since 1977 these teams had met and the result then was a massive 17-0 win for Diamonds (Who were National Champions at the time). Things were a bit closer this time with Stokes Valley frustrating United in the first half and keeping the score at 0-0 going into half time.
Coach Guillermo Schiltenwolf made a couple of changes, resting captain Cameron Stephan, due to a niggling injury. He gave a debut to Assistant Coach Gonzalo Amado, who is returning from a long term injury.
While United were dominating possession and territory, it was a game you could see Stokes Valley getting a break away goal and potentially causing an upset. So when Wynn Skinner rounded a defender and slotted the ball in in the 59th minute, there was a sigh of relief from the United fans. It also opened the flood gates with Wynn Skinner getting a second, Coco Heredia & Nacho Junca all scoring in the next 12 minutes
Leo Villa completed the day with an exquisite chip over the keeper to make the score 5-0
The draw for the next round of the Cups will be made around lunchtime on Tuesday
