It is with deep sadness that Wellington United announces the passing of one of our finest, club Life Member Leo Zonneveld. Leo was one of the original Dutch immigrants to post-war New Zealand, a carpenter by trade, teaming up to play in the emerging Zealandia club in the 1950s & 60s that was home to many of his countryfolk seeking a new life here. As Zealandia evolved to Wellington United, then Wellington Diamond United in the 60s and finally back to Wellington United in 1986, Leo was a constant. As with all his fellow countrymen, Leo was a talented and capable footballer, appearing at Central League and National League level in the late 60s/early 70s. In this time he helped define the brand of football that was influenced by both Dutch and later Hungarian migrants which became synonymous with the club,
A proud Netherlands supporter his passion for football was always obvious, and he revered the mighty Dutch teams of the 70s & 80s. As a club man, Leo was loved and respected by all who knew him, and like his son Ron, a universally popular club member, who continued to make a meaningful contribution in any way he could over many, many years. His Thursday night card school with lifetime friends Frank Papp, Gary Parkinson and Mike Grimmer was a weekly highlight over the years. His warm smile and welcoming handshake made any visitor to Newtown Park feel welcome, and will be greatly missed. Leo’s dear wife Correy passed away some time ago and our thoughts are with his two sons, John and his wife Helen, daughters Stacey and Paula (Canada), and club stalwart Ron and wife Rebecca, children Olivia and Jordi in Wellington.
