805 days - that's how long the Wellington United faithful have had to wait for a home win. The last one being a 4-1 victory over Wellington Olympic in the Central League way back on 5 May 2018. Saturday's 3-1 win over Tawa in the Capital Premier League was definitely one to savour.
While United had only picked up three points before Saturday and were at the foot of the table, they had lost five of their six other games by a margin of just one goal and have been looking promising. Saturday saw that promise come to fruition.
The game started at a high tempo while both teams tried to sus each other out. It had been fairly even for the first half hour, with Wellington United slightly edging it when a Tawa cross into their penalty area apparently hit the hand of a United defender and referee Russell Underwood, pointed to the spot. Tawa's Lachlan Hill stepped up and scored the penalty.
In past weeks, United have tended to drop their heads a bit when they have gone a goal down, but not this week and two minutes later an attack down the left hand side saw Tawa's keeper Lance Ramaekers, unable to hold a shot and Cole Hosking Berge was on hand to even up the scores.
United started to get the upper hand after this and just before half time Leo Villa hit a superb shot which Ramaekers did well to parry, but unfortunately for Tawa it was parried into the hand of a defender and United had a penalty. Michael McCutcheon stepped up and cooly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
In the second half United kept their shape, and controlled the game more than Tawa. In the first minute of added on time, Leo Villa, who had been bossing the midfield found himself just outside the six yard box, with no United players around, but three Tawa defenders watching him. As none challenged him he opted to have a shot and the final score finished 3-1 to give United a much needed win.
