It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. That's the Diamonds losing a game, which happened when they came up against Wairarapa United on Saturday. Missing five regular starters due to the University Futsal Championship, coach Maika Ruyter-Hooley was still able to field a strong team which showcased the clubs emerging talent and depth.
It took the Diamonds just five minutes to get the ball in te net when Jemma Robertson cut into the penalty area from the left and sent a shot to the far post, Pepi Olliver-Bell came running in to ensure the ball got over the line only for the assistant referee to flag for offside.
Ten minutes later it was Wairarapa who had the ball in the back of the net after a Kennedy Bryant corner was met by the head of Kelsi Rutene to make it 1-0. It was a tight contest and despite Diamonds enjoying more of the possession and territory in the first fifteen minutes of the second half, it was Wairarapa United that doubled their league when Samoan international, TJ Lynne-Lewis, broke down the right wing and beat Molly Simons in the Diamonds goal. Diamonds pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute through the ever reliable Jemma Robertson, but it wasn't enough and Wairarapa's dominance in the midfield proved to be the difference and gave them the three points.
In the Men's Capital Premier game, United took on North Wellington reserves and a very close game between two evenly matched teams resulted in a tightly fought 0-0 draw.
Defender Fizz Aden and midfielder Leo Villa had impressive games for United. The game produced a few half chances for both teams and North Wellington keeper, Nick Stanton, made a couple of crucial saves towards the end of the game to ensure the game remained scoreless.
Both coaches agreed that a draw was a fair result, with neither team being able to assert dominance over the other. The result leaves United unbeaten in second place on the table with seven points and a big game away next weekend to top of the table Stop Out.
