Jemma Robertson notched up her 50th goal in her 82nd game for the club on Saturday as the Diamonds overcame a strong challenge from fellow W-League side Petone in the Kate Sheppard Cup.
Diamonds made one change from the team that defeated Seatoun 6-0 in the league the week before, with Coco Murphy coming in for Charlotte Wilford-Carrol. Petone had made four changes from their last game which due to a postponement was two weeks ago. Diamonds had already played Petone in the league this season and came away with a comfortable 3-0 win, but any thoughts they may of had of this game being similar were put to bed by Petone who were alot more organised defensively.
For the second week in a row it was Liz Crowe who opened the scoring for Wellington United, this time with a long range effort. United then proceeded to set up camp in Petone's half but despite several chances a combination of good saves from keeper Julia Olthuis, several near misses and Diamonds not taking their chances the score remained 1-0 at half time.
It was six minutes into the second half when Robertson chalked up her half century of goals for the club. Emma Main broke through and chipped an advancing keeper only for the ball to hit the crossbar, her follow up header was cleared off the line but only as far as Robertson in the six yard area and she had no problem finding the back of the net.
The game was starting to look safe for United until the 79th minute when Petone's Amanda Hewitt got one back for Petone. This lead to a frantic last 10 minutes with Petone searching for an equaliser to force extra time, but they were unable to further breakdown Diamonds strong defence and the game finished 2-1 to United
