Wellington United Diamonds had their third five goal win in a row on Saturday as the downed Petone 5-0 in a W-League game at Newtown Park. The win means they stay in first place on goal difference, but Palmerston North Marist have managed to close the gap to just one goal with a 6-0 win over Seatoun.
It took Diamonds just nine minutes to open the scoring through Charlotte Wilford Carroll. It wasn't long before Jemma Robertson thought she had got on the scoresheet tapping in a cross from Dani Ohlsson, but it was somewhat inexplicably called offside and she had to wait to the second half, getting two goals in four minutes to take her tally for the season to 22.
While it was another five goal win, it was the defence that shone this week, with particularly good performances from Rosie Wild, who was awarded Player of the Match and Hope Gilchrist, who was making her 50th appearance for United. Neither were letting anyone get past them. It was a good foundation to build on and in the second half it started to pay off. Dani Ohlsson made a break down the right wing and her cross found Katie Barrott who turned nicely before sending the ball into the net.
Then it was Jemma Robertson's turn, with two goals in five minutes, the first from an acute angle near the byline and the second, what is becoming a trademark for her, a cut in from the left wing and a shot from about 25 meters that gave the keeper no chance. Dani Ohlsson completed the scoring in the 90th minute when the ball was bouncing around the six yard area and she slotted it past Ariana Gray in the Petone goal.
There was also some good new for coach Maika Ruyter-Hooley with returns from injury for Nat Olson, who had been out since June and Fran Grange who hadn't played at all this season due to a back injury.
The next three weeks are going to be crucial for the Diamonds, with Palmerston North Marist hot on their heals in the race for the W-League title. Diamonds face Seatoun at home before away trips to North Wellington and Western Suburbs, while Palmerston North Marist face Western Suburbs, Wairarapa United and North Wellington.
