Wellington United blew a two goal lead and a golden opportunity for three away points at Richard Prouse Park in Wainuiomata on Saturday.
It was a loss that was owned by coach Guillermo Schiltenwolf, admitting that he had made personal changes too early and that ultimately cost United the game.
Wellington United started well and in the words of Wainuiomata coach, Rupert Kemeys, completely dominated the midfield in the first half. The domination paid off after half an hour when they got two goals in two minutes with Mike McCutcheon and Cole Hosking Berge netting for United. They went into the sheds 2-0 up and looking comfortable.
Wainuiomata came out fighting in the second half and pushing up the field a lot more, but despite their increased pressure they weren't getting much result for their efforts as Wellington United effectively closed them down and continued to control the game. Things changed in the 57th minute when Schiltenwolf took Martin Packer off and then shortly after subbed goalscorer Cole Hosking Berge. This was followed by some bad luck when Amir Mandalawi went down with an injury and also had to be replaced.
Then a long cross ball from Wainuiomata, was latched onto by Kailan Gould who slotted the ball into the net and Wainui's comeback was on. Five minutes later it was all even when Gould converted a penalty. United's players head's dropped and they sat back hoping for the final whistle. But Wainui in front of their boisterous home crowd could see the chance for stealing a victory and in the 4th minute of added on time Jared Mitchell managed to poke the ball over United's goal line to give Wainui a 3-2 win.
