A polished performance from Wellington United saw them maintain their unbeaten record and retain the Commemorative Cup beating rivals Miramar Rangers at Wakefield Park on Saturday.
With the game originally scheduled for Sunday, it was moved due to Chatham Cup commitments on Monday, but it meant that it had to be played on the turf at Wakefield Park as Miramar's home grounds were in use.
United thought they had opened the scoring after 20 minutes when Wynn Skinner unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot into an empty net, but the assistant referee had already flagged for a foul on the keeper. Skinner only had to wait six more minutes to get the ball into the net again, finishing off a passage of good play from the United team.
Miramar's response was almost immediate, Kaeden Atkins breaking down the left and sending his shot past Crawford Plenderleith in the United goal to level up the scores.
Three minutes into the second half, Leo Villa took a corner which was met with a powerful header by defender Abdallah Khaled giving the Miramar defence no chance of stopping it.
The 2-1 win means United are unbeaten at the half way point of the league, however they do still have to play Lower Hutt City who went to the top of the table with a 5-1 win over Upper Hutt City and now lead on goal difference
