Victoria University came away with all three points at Newtown Park on Saturday in a scrappy encounter that didn't do much for the enjoyment of the spectators.
It was a cagy first half with neither side being able to establish any sort of dominance and largely cancelling each other out. University did have a chance to go ahead before the break when the won a penalty for handball. It was probably debatable whether or not the Wellington United defenders hands were in an unnatural when the ball hit them at close range. The referee thought so and pointed at the spot. United's keeper Crawford Plenderleith picked the right way to dive and it stayed 0-0.
University broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute Joe Collicoat had a shoot which looked as if it would be cleared by defender Jackson Straugheir, however he heard the call "keepers" so left it for the keeper, unfortunately it wasn't the keeper that made this call and all he coud do is watch the ball float into the net.
15 minutes later is was all square when Mike McCutcheon stormed in to the penalty area and blasted his shot past Uni's Matthew Walker.
The second half was similar to the first both teams shutting each other down and neither managing to get on top. It was another defensive error by Wellington United that allowed Joe Collicoat to get his and Victoria University's second of the day two minutes from time and give University a 2-1 win.
