Wellington United's men's and women's first teams continued on their winning way this weekend.
The Diamonds easily dispatched Victoria University 7-0 to set up a title showdown with Palmerston North Marist next weekend, while the men maintained their quest for promotion with a 2-0 win over Tawa.
The Diamonds were up first and dominated from the start, given the two previous encounters this season had finished in 9-0 & 8-1 victories it was no surprise. Pepi Olliver-Bell, playing on the right wing opened the scoring in the 14th minute when she latched on to a through ball and the Vic Uni keeper, Samantha Gard, was unable to hold her shot. Five minutes later Sarah Alder got the first of her three when Jemma Robertson broke down the left and forced a save from the keeper, the ball rebounded to her and the keeper made yet another save but this time it fell to the feet of Alder who put it in the back of the net. Alder's second goal came when she found herself with the ball on the edge of the penalty area, spied the keeper off her line and sent a shot into the top corner. Right back Zoe Barrott decided to get in on the act and headed forward where she received the ball and cut into the penalty area driving a low shot into the net. Emma Main then made it 5-0 in the 36th minute when a kick out from the keeper found a Diamond defender and was then played to Main in the midfield about 35 meters out from goal she lifted a great shot over the keeper.
In the second half Zoe Barrott scored her second which was almost a carbon copy of her first, then Diamonds won a penalty after a foul on Jemma Robertson, Robertson who normally would take the penalty selflessly handed the ball to Alder who got her hat-trick with the resulting shot.
Over at Karori, Waterside Karori and Palmerston North Marist drew 2-2, the result means that in next weekends clash between Diamonds and Palmerston North Marist, in Palmerston North, the winner will win the W-league. If the game ends in a draw then Diamonds will have the chance to win the league in the last game of the season against Seatoun.
In the Men's Capital Premier division, United took on Tawa who had won their last four games and had risen to third place just four points behind United. United were without captain Cam Stephan who was out with a knee injury and they also lost striker Wynn Skinner who got injured in the warm up.
United opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Coco Heredia dribbled the ball into six yard area and layed it back to Fizz Aden on the edge of the penalty area who put the ball in to the top corner of the net. United continued to press in what was a fairly even contest. They were rewarded with a goal just on half time, when a Leo Villa corner was met on the goal line by Joaquim Pedron.
The goal came as a hammer blow to Tawa, who never really recovered from it and never really troubled Crawford Plenderleith in the United goal. Tawa's Doyle D'Mello was sent off five minutes from time after picking up a second yellow card, but this had no real effect on the game as United ran out comfortable 2-0 winners and opened up a seven point gap between them and third place.
Next weekend sees them take on league leaders Lower Hutt City who they trail by three points but have played one game less
