Our Coaching Squad

Coaches are the glue that holds our football family together. They are our role models, our guides, our cheerleaders, our support people our fun facilitators! Football is their passion; their love of the game is infectious and they are a big part of the reason many of our players return season upon season!

Profiles of both of our full time head coaches are listed below.
Snippets on all of our coaches can be found through our Good Sorts Family page :)

Guille first joined Wellington United in 2011. Through his Argentinian football roots and ongoing learning of the game; Guille has instilled a fantastic playing style at United and more importantly a vision of what it takes to be a successful football club. He lifted the Women's team from the bottom of the table to their first ever Central League title 2016. That same year he assisted Wellington Olympic to the Men's Central League title!! He lead our Diamonds to two more league titles in 2018 and 2019 before handing over the reigns to Maika. He is still heavily invested in the Women's side of the club assisting in the development and coaching of the up and coming Diamonds through both the Golazo Academy and the Sapphires.

With more than 20 years of coaching experience and a CV with success after success; Guille was ready for a new challenge and in 2020 took over as head coach of our Men's 1st team, a team which had just been relegated the year prior. It took Guille just two years to turn their fortunes, and more importantly their culture, around coming home in second place in 2021!

In addition to Club land football success, Guille coached the Samoan National U17 Women's Team to their first ever win at the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup Qualifiers. Guille is certainly destined for bigger things, so we are very fortunate for the work that he continues to put in to developing and cementing a pathway for both players and coaches at Wellington United.

Maika first joined Wellington United as a player in 2016 and was a key player as we marched towards our first ever Women's Central League title! Humble as ever, we only learnt from google that she was a semi-professional player in the (Australian) W-League where she was the first player to notch up 50 matches for Melbourne Victory no less! She even played in the 2012 Grand Final! She was also a part of the Matildas training squad :)

Added to her top level playing experience, Maika has over 5 years of coaching experience and we were thrilled when in 2018 Maika took the reins of the Sapphires! After a couple of seasons with the Sapphires, and a trip to Sweden coaching the girls at the Gothia Cup, Maika took over as head coach of the Diamonds. Leading the Diamonds to the 2020 and 2021 W-League titles was no easy feat; especially with the COVID factor thrown in the mix! Maika was also the Assistant Coach for the Capital Womens team for both the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Maika is a real leader both and off the field and in 2021 was a huge driving force behind the scenes as our Junior Operations Manager. Having completed her PHD; she is pretty clued up to say the least! We are extremely lucky to have such a well-rounded and successful high-achieving coach within our family :) We very much look forward to the Women's National League transitioning into a Club based league!
